Great Advice for Grad Students

The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Prof Hacker blog recently posted an Open Letter to New Graduate Students that contains a lot of useful advice. I highly recommend that you read it.

One of those pieces of advice is to “Meet your subject librarian”! Remember that I’m always available for research consultations and to answer library-related questions. I am your information expert on campus! I look forward to assisting you as you progress through your grad school career.

Hello! Welcome to a new academic year here at UCI!

This is also a new start for the blog following some reworking of what I want to do with it.

I had previously posted new books on a regular basis, but this became too time consuming to be practical–I’d rather put my time into ordering the books you need and assisting you with your research. New book lists are now available by subject as a website or RSS feed at http://www.lib.uci.edu/collections/new-collections.html. You can bookmark the pages you want or subscribe to a feed. I have also linked those feeds onto my subject guides. I may see if there is a way to feed them onto this blog site as well.

The focus of this blog will shift to announcements of new resources and reminders of ones that we have had for a while that you may have overlooked. I will also post library news, tips for grad students, etc. Posting frequency will probably be closer to once a month, though there will be a small flurry in the next couple of weeks as I make beginning of the year announcements.

If you have any comments or questions, or suggestions for things you would like to see on the blog, please let me know!

Ithaka Case Study in Sustainability: The TLG

Ithaka recently released 12 case studies examining the sustainability of various digital projects. According to their website:

Tens of millions of dollars, pounds, and euros are invested each year by government agencies and private foundations to develop and support digital resources in the not-for-profit sector. As budgets tighten, will these digital resources be able to survive and thrive?

This question is at the heart of the Ithaka Case Studies in Sustainability project, a multi-year, international exploration of the strategies being used to support digital initiatives over the long term. Twelve detailed case studies present the steps project leaders have taken to achieve this, with special attention paid to their strategies for cost management and revenue generation. These studies include financial data, and explore the decision-making process that project leaders undertake when experimenting with different strategies to find the best fit for their organization.

Sustaining Digital Resources: An On-the-Ground View of Projects Today, serves as a guide to the cases, outlining the stages that successful projects undertake in developing sustainability models: from empowering leadership and developing accountability structures, to crafting a strong value proposition that responds to user needs, to securing the resources needed to help the project thrive.

By highlighting the benefits and challenges of a wide range of models, this work is intended to serve as a starting point to understanding the options and obstacles facing digital projects today.

Call for Proposals in Digital Classics

I just spotted a call for book proposals on the Ancient World Bloggers Group site (http://ancientworldbloggers.blogspot.com). Here is a copy of the announcement:

Gorgias Press is expanding its interest in technology and classics and welcomes book proposals regarding digital classics research, for both monographs (including revised dissertations) and edited collections (based on conference sessions or otherwise). Proposals should be no more than 4 pages pdf and include contact details and a biography of the author(s), an overview of the topic and its importance, a brief description of all chapters, and a summation of how this text will relate to other texts in the field. This is an open call. Please send proposals to submissions@gorgiaspress.com.
